FROZEN FOUR BROUGHT IN FROM THE COLD
Dogs Trust Leeds staff are dealing with one of the worst cases of neglect they’ve ever seen after four badly malnourished dogs were rescued from the wintry cold.
The poodle-type dogs were exposed to the icy elements, living in a derelict shed which had a collapsed roof before they were brought into to the charity's rescue centre.
All four are so emaciated their bones are poking through their skin and their fur so matted it’s having to be completely shaved off.
Dogs Trust staff have named the canine quartet John, Paul, George and... Maisie – and have started a round the clock regime to turn them back into a fab four.
Canine carer Jodie says: “It was very upsetting when they came in. They were covered in their own dirt and half starved with their bones poking through their skin. Your instinct is to give them lots of food, but their stomachs are so small we have to give them a little often, just to start building them up”.
“But what’s really amazing is how sweet and loving they are considering what they’ve been through. They’re lovely, friendly dogs,” she added.
Centre Manager Amanda Sands says the dogs are thought to be from the same litter and about 18 months old. They’re suffering from muscle wastage and are so thin their spines and hip bones are showing through their skin making it difficult to groom them properly.
“One looked as though it had a bald back – but it was where the matted fur had just peeled away,” she said.
It’s likely to take the dogs three months to put on a healthy amount of weight and grow their fur back. Dogs Trust staff will start to look for new owners immediately, so they can become involved in the recuperation process.
